Valley of Chandigarh runs through several sectors. In this Valley in sector
10 has been created a cultural zone. In this zone Government
Museum and Art Gallery is located. As per its name its building in itself is a work
of great art. Historical and modern paintings and sculptures of vast range
are housed in the museum. Dr. M.S.Randhawa, the first Chief Commissioner
of Chandigarh Union Territory, was a man of many facts. One of these
was his fondness and love for art. He had remained himself involved
in Kangra and other Pahari miniature paintings as well as Gandhara sculptures. Because
of his interest of anthropologists there is collection of fossils of pre
historicman and his implements.These finds were unearthed in India. In the
complex is museum of Evolution and the and the exhibition gallery housing
interesting features. The core collection of this museum, included 619 Gandhara
sculptures and 92 ancient sculptures from other periods, as well as 447
miniature paintings (mainly from the Punjab Hills but with some Persian,
Mughal and Rajasthani works in addition). Over the past 40 years
more than 9,000 objects have been acquired, the total number of works now
exceeds 10,000.

Museum
of the Evolution of Life (Science Museum)
Inaugurated
on 14 August 1973. A large cyclorama gallery is the focus of the museum;
it depicts the origin of the earth and the evolution of life. Other galleries
introduce the viewer to astronomy, geology and the world of ancient man.

Child
Art Gallery
This
gallery exhibits works by young artists of the Chandigarh. The museum frequently
organises art workshops for students and children.

National
Gallery of Portraits
Located
in Sector 17B and inaugrated on 11th September 1977 with portraits of Indian
freedomfighters, rare documents and recordings of the voices of 125 prominent
figures of India's Independence movement. The gallery now contains approx. 1066
photographs plus fascimiles of original writings, sculptures and
ceramic murals . Some 1300 books on the freedom struggle of India kept in
the library of the gallery.

International
Dolls Museum
Situated
in Bal Bhawan ,Sector 23 and inaugrated on 24th December, 1985, it
contains more than 300 dolls from nearly every country in the world. Ten
ceramic murals and a large model train completes the display.

Punjab
Kala Kendra
Open
from 10.00 hrs to 17.00 hrs Set up in Sector-16, the Kendra is the office
of the Punjab Arts Council (Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi). Exhibitions are
frequently organised in its large galleries and the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademy's
permanent collection of contemporary art is also on display here.
